TOWAMENCIN- Mr. Manero concludes the morning announcements with his quote “have a great day, and make it a great day for somebody else too.” Unknowingly, many people accomplish these actions everyday. The deeds that are done without expected recognition are the best kinds of deeds.

Many don’t know that 19% of North Penn students are economically disadvantaged. With 3,000 students at North Penn, it is impossible to know everyone’s situation outside of the school’s walls. For some kids, going to school might be the best part of their day. The simplest way to make someone’s day could be greeting a peer in the hallway. When you make that awkward eye contact with a student you are unfamiliar with, instead of quickly looking away, a quick greeting might be a better option. That smile, or “hi” could make someone’s day without you even knowing it.

Going out of your way to say “hi” to someone sometimes seems unnecessary, but it could be the one thing that person needed to feel like someone cares about him or her.

You don’t have to know a person to ask if he or she is okay.  A simple task like letting a person share their story with you could make their day that much better.

The lunch ladies at North Penn are a perfect example of people unconsciously brighten people’s day. They have an idea of which kids are economically disadvantaged as they can see who is part of the free lunch program. Although they are aware of who is economically disadvantaged, all the lunch ladies make an effort to greet every kid that comes through the lunch line by saying “have a nice day,” following with a smile. They probably don’t even imagine how many times they make someone’s day.

North Penn does a great job with getting students involved in helping with programs like Little Buddies and Athletes Helping Athletes. Although I encourage everyone who can to get involved in these programs, it is not required for you to help someone out.

At some point during the school year, you are probably just going to have a bad day. Just like you are going to want that one person to say something that turns your day upside down. You should strive to be that person to others everyday.
