Doug Pederson wasted no time “cleaning house” with the Eagles roster, especially with the free agency frenzy in full swing after just over five days. Pederson’s main goal, when he first came to Philly, was to give the Eagles a team identity, as well as, fortify the obvious weaknesses of the team . He is on the right track by focusing his attention on the defensive side of the ball for the free agency period. By addressing the weaknesses of the team from last year, he is showing that he is ready to lead his team to more wins and possibly an NFC East divisional title. However, defense was not the only focus this year in free agency. With the signings of Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel, and now wide receiver Chris Givens, they look to establish the west coast offense scheme that Doug Pederson helped orchestrate in Kansas City.

Besides the free agent signings, the Eagles, more so Doug Pederson, made some bold trade transactions to erase the Chip Kelly misfortune that was last year. Pederson and general manager Howie Roseman started off the new football season with two trades that will help improve the Eagles team with young committed players in this year’s draft. Philly traded cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso to Miami in exchange for the number eight overall pick in this year’s draft. Also, the team put running back Demarco Murray out of his misery by shipping him and a fourth round pick to Tennessee for a fourth round pick in the draft this year. The most current trade the bird gang executed was swapping backup quarterback Mark Sanchez to the Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos for a conditional pick in 2017’s draft. With these trades the Eagles look to acquire some young talented players in the upcoming draft.

The offseason wheeling and dealing by the Philadelphia Eagles is making them appear to be a much more consistent team. The strategy of head coach Doug Pederson is to get players that fit a system they can have the most success in, rather than getting the best players and just plugging them in a system they are not comfortable with, which was the main issue last season with former coach Chip Kelly. Learning from Kelly’s mistakes, Pederson has shaken up the roster in hopes of a solid turnaround this season. With Chase Daniel and Sam Bradford in a projected quarterback battle for the starting position, Brandon Brooks to protect them on the offensive line, Brent Celek and Zach Ertz coming back to serve as reliable third down safety valves, Chris Givens as a solid deep threat, and a defense that brings back Pro Bowler Malcolm Jenkins, and adds premier depth to the defensive secondary with Leodis McKelvin, Rodney McLeod, and Ron Brooks, the Eagles look to bring Philly fans a lot more happiness this coming season.
