College Review: Cairn University

An uncommonly known university on a road that looks like it grows out of a random hill in Langhorne, Cairn University seems like it should be a predictably small backwoods school. But Cairn surprises in many aspects. The small atmosphere makes the student body of 1,200 a close nit family. But this does not make the students adverse to outsiders. While picking up my food in the cafeteria, during my visit, a random student came up to me and asked me to sit at their table. The campus itself is a beautiful mountain like experience with ponds, masses of trees, and some wild life that makes walking in between buildings is not only a short walk but an enjoyable one.

58% of Cairn’s classes have less than 20 students and they claim to have a much more personal teaching experience that just a face in a million that larger colleges have. The class I sat through, logic, had 7 students and everyone was present. The teacher, mullet withstanding, gave a lot of insight and current examples of his topic plus allowed the students to discuss questions. Within the now 100 years of Cairn University, the education level has raised from a one room school in Philadelphia to a 2014 ranking in the edition of Best Colleges.

Cairn also stands out from other schools with their four alternate first year programs for students who are not sure what they would like to study or just want to experience the world. These programs are the same price as a normal first year of college, $22,455, and the credits earned transfer over to the next year of study just like a normal first year of college. The courses are outdoor action which gives students the opportunity to take many trips such as hiking, kayaking, and winter sports. Arts and culture which allows students to study art in museums in the US and at the end of the year visit Rome on a two week trip. Israel and Archeology that focuses on studying archeology and students take a two week trip to Israel to view dig sites that most are not permitted to view and urban ministry where students serve less privileged in inner cities and at the end of the year in Guatemala.

Cairn offers a lot of opportunities that larger more prominent universities do not have such as intimate class rooms, alternate first year programs, and ultimately it’s seemingly isolated campus is about an hour away so the ride home would not be a long one. Over all Cairn seems like a positive environment and valuable place to attend.
