Knight Like- Georgia school’s first integrated prom
Brianna Knowlton
All I can say is: it’s about time. Just this year, Wilcox County High School in Wilcox County, Georgia held its first racially integrated prom. Hooray! Welcome to the 21st century. Before this year, the high school hadn’t held one big prom for its 400 students. Instead, parents and students had organized and hosted separate proms, known to most as the “white prom” and the “black prom.” But this year, the students organized an integrated prom themselves, and the school accepted their proposal and allowed it to be held at the school. The students tried to do the same thing last year, but for some reason, they met a lot of backlash from the community, so it didn’t work out. Oh well, the past is the past, and at least Wilcox County High School is stepping further into the present- even if it took a few decades.
Knight Dislike: du Pont Heir
Naomi Zulauf
Robert H. Richards the heir to the du Pont fortune was sentenced with child rape for sexually assaulting his 2 year old daughter not once, but twice in 2005 and 2007. Also for sexually abusing his 19 month old son in the same time period. While these charges would have landed him in prison for at least 20 years he was released on $60,000 bail. Instead Richards was ordered into a sex offender rehabilitation program because his lawyer argued he would not “fare well in a level 5 setting.” It is truly devastating that the American legal system would allow a multiple time sex offender who raped his children to be released because of his money that bought him ruthless lawyers and the best defense. Richard’s was placed on 8 years’ probation from all children under 16 including his children. But to keep his children and others totally safe there is no question Richard should be in prison for a very long time.
