Giffords Steps Down But Not Out

The public has been embracing Gabrielle Giffords, yet despite her charming popularity, she has announced she is stepping down from her role as an Arizona representative in Congress. Giffords contributes this decision to how she needs more time to continue with her recovery and believes that it is only fair to resign over a year after the shooting. Her only appearance at the capitol was back in August but despite her few political actions; she still strives to make a positive impact and promises to return to help her beloved state someday.

Now Arizona is in need of a new representative, which will be a tiresome search to fill Gifford’s shoes. A primary election could tentatively be held in April with an election to follow in June.  Pia Carusone and Ron Barber have been rumored to be running as they are former aides of Giffords but these have been regarded as false. Even her husband, Mark Kelly, has been speculated to run, but he has denied this.

Giffords still had a year left in her term to finish and must have been troubled by this difficult decision. Luckily, she has not retired and will be back again in the future as long as her recovery continues to improve. She may be a moderate democrat yet she is unique because her horrible brush with death has endeared her to the American public as well as stubborn politicians because she truly advocates for the good of the country and tries to see beyond party lines.

She is often commended for her bipartisanship. There are not many politicians who actually share this view and act upon it. At 41, Giffords still has a bright political future in her reach, and it has been hinted at that Giffords could have become a senator.

Giffords revisited the location where she was shot and allthough painful memories must have been rushing in, she seemed to be collected in the pictures that were released to the media. The event was only attended by a small group of people, including Daniel Hernandez, who literally saved the Congresswoman. Afterwards she continued to spread her goodwill at a food bank. On Tuesday she attended the State of the Union Address as her last official duty. President Obama gave her a hug as the crowd applauded.

On Wednesday morning, Giffords formally issued her resignation with the support of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a friend and representative of Florida and her husband watching. Giffords’ colleagues gave out accolades between during the emotional half an hour event. Also The House put to vote a bill about drug smuggling near the U.S. border which Giffords worked on. This passed without any opposition.

America needs more representatives who are compassionate. Most politicians would be completely devastated and bitter if they needed to deal with a long recovery from a shooting coupled with the burden of emotional stress but Giffords truly makes the best of her time.

I wish that she could continue her work in Congress, but as a hard-working individual Giffords wants to give her best efforts to her job, but it is impossible with all of the distractions. Most of her time over the past year was spent in Houston recuperating. Although it is a shame she cannot continue with her last year as a representative, it would not be at all surprising to see her come back strong and do amazing things for this country, while many will surely be rooting her on to do so.
