The Word of Mitch Lord: Week 13 Love/Hate in the NFL

I will never understand why so many people join a fantasy football league only to forget about it a few weeks into the season. From a young age, I was taught to always honor a commitment, so to join a league and never update your team, to me, at least, is just inconsiderate. What makes it even more difficult to comprehend is that many of those people who are too lazy to update their team are in leagues that they paid to join. It’s like buying a pair of shoes and leaving them in the box and stashing them away in the back of your closet. It’s pointless.

Even if one simply joined a league for fun and doesn’t have much knowledge of football, he should still make it a priority to check his team at least once or twice a week. In fact, one of the other members in my main league (which consists of my dad and his friends) — who’s been a member since the league’s inaugural year — has a quite limited knowledge of the game. He shows up to the draft every year and never ceases to update his team each week — something every member of our league does. His draft strategy is childishly simple: He sees what position he needs and selects the highest ranked player at that position. And you know what? It works for him.

QBs I Love in Week 13

Matt Schaub, Texans: Schaub has been feeling it the past two games, throwing for 842 yards (527 of which are due to his unbelievable performance against Jacksonville) and two touchdowns. Two more favorable stats: The Titans are allowing the seventh most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks (18.1) and have allowed a whopping 22 passing touchdowns this year.

Tony Romo, Cowboys: Something I’ve learned this year: Always start a quarterback when he’s playing the Eagles. Always.

QBs I Hate in Week 13

Joe Flacco, Ravens: The Steelers haven’t allowed an opposing quarterback to throw for more than 200 yards since Week 6. The last time the Ravens met the Steelers, Flacco threw for a modest 164 yards and no touchdowns. Not to mention, Pittsburgh allows the second fewest fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks (10.8).

Eli Manning, Giants: Manning has a poor track record against the Skins: 16 career games, 55.9 completion percentage, 224.2 yards per game, 13 touchdowns, 15 interceptions. If you’d like a more recent sample size, in his last three games against Washington, Manning has thrown for 862 yards (287.3 yards per game), one touchdown and six interceptions.

RBs I Love in Week 13

Beanie Wells, Cardinals: Let’s forget about his ugly 2.8 yards per carry average and focus on his two scores. It was the former Buckeye’s first game back since Week 3 against the Eagles and, despite his mere 48 yards on 17 carries, he managed to still deliver a solid fantasy performance by finding the end zone twice. Luckily for Wells, he’ll be opposed by a Jets team that’s currently the laughingstock of the NFL. New York’s run defense currently allows the third most rushing yards per game (142.8) and has surrendered 12 rushing touchdowns. Wells should be able to make his way into the end zone once again this week.

Trent Richardson, Browns: Richardson has seen no less than 24 carries per game over the past four weeks, and, against an Oakland defense that has allowed the second most rushing touchdowns (15) and the third most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs (22.6), that trend should continue. Another plus: In the past three games, Richardson has 16 receptions out of the backfield. The Raiders have allowed 70 receptions to running backs this year (3rd most in the NFL).

RBs I Hate in Week 13

Steven Jackson, Rams: I’m sorry. I just can’t trust a running back playing the 49ers. I just can’t.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Bengals: Green-Ellis has had a solid last two weeks, but they came against two decimated teams and run defenses (Chiefs and Raiders). This week’s a different story. The Chargers come in allowing the fifth fewest rushing yards per game (91.5) and, since San Diego’s pass defense is as poor as it is, I would think Andy Dalton will be trying to get the ball into A.J. Green’s hands more than Green-Ellis’.

WRs I Love in Week 13

Demaryius Thomas, Broncos: “A break-out season” is quite a larger understatement when describing Thomas’ impressive year thus far. He’s been without-a-doubt Manning’s favorite target, and, with a matchup against the worst pass defense in the league, Thomas’ phenomenal season should get even better.

Davone Bess, Dolphins: Bess has been targeted at least six times each game this season. Couple that with a Patriots defense that just cannot defend the pass, and you have a recipe for success.

Cecil Shorts, Jaguars: It’s pretty clear that Shorts is the man in Jacksonville. While that really isn’t saying all that much, believe me, Shorts is a solid bet. He’s good for at least one long ball a game. Here are his longest catches by week: 39, 80, 8, 34, 42, 35, 25, 52, 67, and 59. Shorts is averaging an astounding 20.8 yards per catch this season, second in the NFL to Chris Givens of the Rams (21.2). This second-year receiver out of Mount Union has proven that he’s a big-time playmaker and has solidified himself as a sound number two receiver.

WRs I Hate in Week 13

All Eagles Receivers: Don’t even think about it.

Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals: It’s such a shame. Just look at his quarterback.

When it comes to deciding on your lineup, one minor slip-up could be that utterly frustrating difference between a win and a loss; choose wisely.
